Subject Offerings

Subjects Built Around Your Child's Future

The American curriculum at UGA runs across four years — Freshman (Grade 9), Sophomore (Grade 10), Junior (Grade 11), and Senior (Grade 12). The program combines 17 subjects spanning English, Social Studies, and electives, giving students a total of 23 courses distributed across the high school journey. Each course runs across two semesters, with each semester earning 0.5 credit toward the diploma — 1 full credit equating to 120 hours of learning.

The curriculum is built around six core academic strands, with elective options and AP pathways layered in as students progress.

English Language Arts
Covers academic writing, literary analysis, argumentation, and rhetoric. Builds the reading and writing skills required for AP coursework and US university admission.
Mathematics
Progresses from Algebra I and Geometry through Pre-Calculus and, where appropriate, AP Calculus or AP Statistics. Develops quantitative reasoning and problem-solving across all grade levels.
Sciences
Biology, Chemistry, and Physics are offered as standalone courses with AP pathways available. Combines conceptual understanding with analytical and data interpretation skills.
US History & Government
Examines American political history, constitutional frameworks, and civic institutions. Develops critical evaluation of primary sources and policy analysis.
World History
Surveys global civilizations, major historical events, and international relations. Builds comparative thinking and cross-cultural understanding.
Economics
Introduces micro and macroeconomic concepts including supply and demand, fiscal and monetary policy, and global trade. Develops analytical and decision-making skills grounded in real-world application.
Advanced Placement (AP) Courses
AP courses are available from Grade 10 onward, with UGA's examination strategy designed so students complete all AP exams by the end of Grade 11. This allows actual AP scores — not predicted grades — to be submitted with university applications. AP subjects include but are not limited to: Calculus AB, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, English Language & Composition, US History, and Macroeconomics.
Electives
A selection of elective courses — including Business, Computer Science, and Art — allows students to build a well-rounded academic profile aligned to their university and career direction.

A Transcript Universities Can Trust

Because the diploma is accredited by Cognia and the program is continuously audited against global accreditation standards, the diploma and transcript your child graduates with carries independent weight — not just the school’s word for it.

Curriculum Overview

The Four-Year Journey

Grade 9

Freshman Year: Building the Foundation

Students are introduced to the American curriculum methodology — US Common Core standards, academic writing, structured debate, and critical thinking. Core subjects include English Language Arts, Algebra/Geometry, Introduction to Sciences, and World History. This year establishes the academic habits and expectations that underpin the entire program.

Grade 10

Sophomore Year: Developing Academic Identity

Students deepen their subject knowledge and begin to develop a clearer academic profile. Elective choices open up, allowing students to begin tailoring their diploma towards future university interests. A total of 23 subjects are distributed between 9th and 12th grade, with over 200 elective subjects available to enrich the portfolio.

Grade 11

Junior Year: Raising the Bar

The most academically intensive year for most students. This is when Advanced Placement (AP) courses become central to the program. Students begin building a competitive university profile, with coursework aligned to College Board AP exam frameworks. Strong performance in Year 11 is one of the most significant factors in selective university admissions.

Grade 12

Senior Year: Completing Your Diploma

Students finalise their credit requirements, sit final assessments, and complete their diploma. Guidance Counsellor support at UGA is at its most intensive during this year — covering university applications, personal statements, and post-secondary planning. The program uses US Common Core Standards with a focus on critical thinking and writing throughout.

Flexible Entry & Exit Points

The American High School Diploma is designed to accommodate students at different stages of their education. Students do not need to begin in Grade 9 to earn the diploma.

Entering at Grade 10 or 11 — Students transferring from another school system can be assessed and placed appropriately. Prior learning is recognized and credit mapping ensures no time is wasted.

Completing in 2, 3, or 4 years — Flexibility exists to complete the program in 2, 3, or 4 years, depending on the student’s needs.

Exiting with a Transcript — Students who do not complete all four years still leave with an official American school transcript, reflecting US credits earned — useful for university applications in many countries.

Mid-Year Entry — Because UGA is fully online, students can begin at any point in the academic year without losing progress or waiting for a new cohort.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the American High School Diploma?
The American High School Diploma is a credential awarded upon successful completion of a structured four-year high school program following US curriculum standards. Unlike many international qualifications, the American diploma is valued for its breadth — requiring students to demonstrate competence across English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and electives. At UGA, this program is delivered in partnership with WorldEd School — a Cognia-accredited American school based in Miami, Florida. Cognia is the largest and most respected educational accreditation organisation in the world, with more than 130 years of experience, present in over 100 countries and responsible for 40,000 schools worldwide. The Cognia seal means UGA's American diploma is recognized by universities in the US, UK, Europe, and beyond.
Does UGA provide university application support as part of the program?
Yes. Every UGA student has access to a dedicated university admissions counsellor who works with them from subject selection through to final application. This includes guidance on university shortlisting, personal statement writing, application strategy, and deadlines — for institutions in the US, UK, Europe, and beyond. This is not an add-on service; it is built into the UGA program
How are US university applications handled — is the SAT required?
US university applications are submitted through the Common App or directly through individual university portals, depending on the institution. The SAT is not universally required — many US universities have moved to test-optional admissions policies — but strong AP scores are a significant advantage and in many cases carry more weight than standardised test results. Your child's admissions counsellor will advise on whether SAT preparation makes sense based on their target institutions.
Is the LMS accessible on a tablet or mobile, or is a laptop required?

Can a student take the American Diploma alongside IGCSEs or A Levels at UGA simultaneously?

Can a student take the American Diploma alongside IGCSEs or A Levels at UGA simultaneously?
In most cases, no — not as a direct combination running at the same time in the same year. The American Diploma and the British curriculum (IGCSEs and A Levels) are separate pathways at UGA, each carrying a full academic timetable. Some students transition between pathways — for example, completing IGCSEs before moving into the American Diploma track — but running both simultaneously would place an unreasonable academic load on most students. If your child has a specific situation in mind, speak to our admissions team and we will advise on what is realistic.
Will my child have a dedicated mentor or point of contact?
Yes. Every UGA student is assigned a dedicated mentor who monitors academic progress, attendance, and wellbeing throughout the programme. Your child will always have a named person to go to — and so will you as a parent. The mentor is also your first point of contact if anything needs attention between formal progress reviews.
What additional academic support is available if my child is struggling?
If a student is falling behind or finding a subject difficult, their mentor flags this early — progress is monitored continuously, not just at the end of term. From there, targeted support can be put in place, including additional guidance from subject teachers. Because class sizes are a maximum of five students, teachers already know each student's individual strengths and gaps in a way that simply is not possible in larger settings.
How do parents stay informed about their child's progress?
Parents receive structured progress reports each term, covering academic performance, attendance, and engagement across all subjects. In addition, your child's mentor is available as an ongoing point of contact — you do not have to wait for a scheduled report to raise a concern or ask a question. Our aim is that you always have a clear, current picture of how your child is doing.
